Questions:

How much memory should a computer that is running Windows XP have? Microsoft states that Windows XP requires at least 256 MB of RAM, however simply running antivirus software on a computer with only 256 MB of RAM will grind a computer to a halt. You might be able to get by with 512 MB of RAM, but as a general rule you should have at least 1 GB of RAM. Windows XP supports up to 4 GB of RAM.

 

How much memory should a computer that is running Windows Vista or 7 have? As a general rule you should have at least 2 GB of RAM.

 

How much does RAM cost? Generally used RAM is about $20 per GB used, and $40 per GB new.

Will adding RAM really make my 10 year old desktop computer run fast? Yes. If your old desktop has only 256 MB of RAM, then an upgrade to 2 or even 4 GB can make your computer run faster than most lower priced new laptops. Windows XP is also a solid operating system.
